About Echocardiography (Echo Test)
An echocardiogram (echo) uses ultrasound waves to create moving pictures of the heart. It shows how well the heart pumps (ejection fraction), the size of the heart chambers, the condition of the valves and the presence of fluid around the heart.
The test is quick, painless and uses no radiation, making it safe for people of all ages, including pregnant women.
Also known as: 2D Echo, cardiac ultrasound, ECHO test
Who is it recommended for?
Your doctor may recommend this if you have:
- Breathlessness, swelling of legs or suspected heart failure
- Heart murmur or suspected valve disease
- After a heart attack to assess heart muscle damage
- High blood pressure to look for heart thickening
- Before surgery or chemotherapy as advised
- Follow-up of known heart disease
How is it done at AKG Hospital?
- Positioning You lie on your left side; small ECG stickers are placed on the chest.
- Scanning A gel-coated probe is moved over the chest to record images of the heart.
- Doppler study Blood flow across the valves is measured, and you may hear a whooshing sound.
- Report The cardiologist interprets the images and provides a report.
How to prepare
- No fasting is required for a routine echo
- Wear comfortable, two-piece clothing
- Bring previous echo reports for comparison
Recovery & aftercare
There is no recovery time. You can return to normal activities immediately after the test.
Benefits
- Painless and radiation-free
- Completed in about 20–40 minutes
- Gives detailed information on heart function and valves
- Safe to repeat for follow-up
Risks & when to seek help
Routine transthoracic echocardiography has no known risks.
