Stroke Treatment & Thrombolysis

24x7 stroke care at AKG Hospital, Kannur: rapid CT/MRI, clot-dissolving thrombolysis, stroke ICU care and rehabilitation. Act FAST — every minute counts.

About Stroke Treatment & Thrombolysis

A stroke happens when blood supply to part of the brain is blocked (ischaemic stroke) or a blood vessel bursts (haemorrhagic stroke). Brain cells begin to die within minutes, so rapid treatment can make the difference between recovery and lifelong disability.

AKG Hospital provides rapid-response stroke care with 24x7 emergency coverage. In eligible patients who reach early, clot-dissolving medicine (thrombolysis) can restore blood flow. Our neurologists, emergency team, radiology and critical care work together, followed by stroke rehabilitation and secondary prevention.

Also known as: Brain attack treatment, paralysis treatment, clot-busting therapy

Who is it recommended for?

Your doctor may recommend this if you have:

  • Sudden weakness or numbness of the face, arm or leg, especially on one side
  • Sudden difficulty speaking or understanding speech
  • Sudden loss of vision in one or both eyes
  • Sudden loss of balance, severe dizziness or difficulty walking
  • Sudden, severe headache with no known cause
  • Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) — symptoms that resolve within minutes

How is it done at AKG Hospital?

  1. Emergency assessment On arrival, the emergency team checks vital signs, blood sugar and neurological signs immediately.
  2. Brain imaging CT or MRI scan in coordination with Radiology distinguishes a clot from bleeding.
  3. Thrombolysis For eligible ischaemic stroke patients within the treatment window, clot-dissolving medicine is given intravenously.
  4. Intensive monitoring Blood pressure, heart rhythm and neurological status are closely monitored.
  5. Rehabilitation & prevention Physiotherapy, speech therapy and medicines to prevent another stroke begin as early as possible.

How to prepare

  • Call for help and come to the emergency department immediately — do not wait for symptoms to settle
  • Note the time symptoms started or when the person was last seen normal
  • Do not give food, water or medicines by mouth
  • Bring a list of current medicines, especially blood thinners

Recovery & aftercare

Recovery varies with the size and location of the stroke. Many improvements happen in the first few months. Rehabilitation, control of blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, quitting smoking and taking prescribed medicines reduce the chance of another stroke.
