About Upper GI Endoscopy (Gastroscopy)
Upper gastrointestinal (GI) endoscopy, or gastroscopy, uses a thin flexible tube with a camera to look at the lining of the oesophagus (food pipe), stomach and first part of the small intestine (duodenum).
Our high-definition endoscopy suite allows accurate diagnosis, biopsy and many therapeutic procedures, such as control of bleeding, in the same sitting.
Also known as: Gastroscopy, OGD scopy, UGI scopy
Who is it recommended for?

- Persistent acidity, heartburn or indigestion
- Difficulty or pain in swallowing
- Vomiting blood or black stools
- Unexplained anaemia or weight loss
- Suspected ulcers, H. pylori infection or GI cancer
- Surveillance in liver cirrhosis
How is it done at AKG Hospital?
- Preparation Your throat is sprayed with a numbing medicine; sedation may be offered.
- Examination The endoscope is passed gently through the mouth while you lie on your left side.
- Biopsy / treatment Small tissue samples or treatments can be done painlessly.
